Accessing Theme Management
WP Spotlight’s Theme Management feature allows you to quickly browse, install, activate, and manage themes without navigating through multiple menus on your WordPress dashboard. Here’s a comprehensive guide to help you make the most of this feature and keep your site’s appearance fresh and functional.
Accessing Theme Management
Open WP Spotlight: Use the main key bind Alt+S (Check key bind customization to set your own keyboard shortcut)
Select Themes:
If you have a key bind specifically for themes (default: Alt+T), use it to directly open Theme Management.
Alternatively, open WP Spotlight, then select Themes from the menu.
Theme Management Options
Once you’re in Theme Management, you’ll see the following options:
- Repository: Browse and install new themes from the WordPress repository.
- Activate: Switch between installed themes with a single click.
- Delete: Remove unused themes from your site.
- Download: Save the theme files to your local device.
Below is a breakdown of each option and how to use it.
1. Repository: Installing New Themes
View Top Themes: When you click on Repository, WP Spotlight displays a submenu with the top 10 trending themes from the WordPress repository.
Search for Specific Themes: You can enter a theme name in the search bar to find a specific theme in the repository.
Install Options: Once you’ve located the desired theme, you’ll see several options:
- Install: Installs the theme without activating it.
- Install & Activate: Installs the theme and sets it as the active theme.
- Download: Downloads the theme file for manual installation.
- View Org Page: Opens the theme’s page on WordPress.org in a new browser tab.
This streamlined process allows you to browse and install themes from within WP Spotlight, saving you time and effort.
2. Activate: Switching Between Themes
View Installed Themes: Select Activate to see a list of all themes currently installed on your WordPress site. The currently active theme is marked with a green tag.
Switch Themes: Click on any inactive theme to activate it immediately. WP Spotlight will automatically switch the active theme, and you can continue working without any interruptions.
3. Delete: Removing Themes
View Downloaded Themes: Choose Delete to see a list of all themes installed on your site, excluding the active theme.
Delete a Theme: Click on any theme in the list to delete it permanently. Only inactive themes will appear in this list, ensuring that you don’t accidentally delete the currently active theme.
4. Download: Saving Themes Locally
Save Theme Files: Selecting Download will allow you to download the theme files directly to your device. This can be useful if you want to make offline edits, save a backup, or use the theme on a different WordPress installation.
Simply click on a theme in the list, and the theme’s zip file will be downloaded to your computer.
Searching for a Specific Theme by Name
WP Spotlight allows you to search for a specific theme by name, which is helpful if you know the exact theme you want to manage. Here’s how:
- Open WP Spotlight and either select Themes or type the theme name directly in the search bar.
- WP Spotlight will display the theme and its current status (e.g., Installed, Active).
- Based on its status, you’ll be able to install, activate, delete, or download the theme directly from the search results.
Example Workflow: Installing and Activating a New Theme
To better understand Theme Management in WP Spotlight, let’s go through a practical example:
- Install Theme: Open WP Spotlight, go to Themes > Repository, and search for “Astra.”
- Install & Activate: Select Install & Activate to both download and apply the theme to your site in a single step.
- Switch to a Different Theme: Later, if you want to switch back to another theme (e.g., “Twenty Twenty-Three”), open WP Spotlight, go to Activate, and select “Twenty Twenty-Three.”
- Delete Unused Theme: If you decide not to keep the “Astra” theme, go to Delete, find “Astra” in the list, and click to remove it from your site.
With WP Spotlight’s Theme Management, you can handle all your theme needs in one place, keeping your site looking fresh without the usual hassle of switching menus. This feature gives you complete control over your site’s appearance while making theme management intuitive and efficient.
